NEW ORLEANS - "Give your block a little love" was the message Saturday in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Community members tackled overgrown and abandoned lots on Forstall Street.

The goal was to clean up trash, cut overgrown grass and even board up a blighted house.

The event was organized by A Community Voice, which said neighbors have complained about the blighted properties which sit near a popular playground.

"We chose this block because its adjacent to Sam Bonart Park and Playground, which the kids are using and we felt the high grass and the house that was unboarded was a danger to the kids coming to play in this playground," said Vanessa Gueringer, the vice president of the Ninth Ward Chapter of A Community Voice.

A small grant from the mayor's office helped made the clean up possible.
