NEW ORLEANS – A former resident of a group home allegedly murdered the caretaker of the home by hitting her with an air conditioning window unit on her head and then tying a plastic bag over her head, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Ricky Russell, 31, entered the Gentilly home in the 5600 block of Lafaye Street and attacked the 74-year-old woman due to an ongoing argument, police said.

He then drove her car into the lake at Franklin Avenue and Lakeshore Drive, according to the NOPD.

Russell, who was wet from the lake water, was spotted by a Levee Board officer as he was walking down Lakeshore Drive.

When the officer stopped him for questioning, he immediately admitted to the murder, according to the police.

Russell  was booked with first degree muder. He was on parole until October 17 for two counts of simple criminal damage and resisting police. He has previously been arrested for aggravated battery, battery, theft, trespassing, disturbing the peace and warrants.

Citizens with information are asked to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
