NEW ORLEANS - Jackson Square is considered by many to be one of the jewels of New Orleans and brings locals and tourists together in a beautiful space.
On Wednesday, the American Planning Association recognized it as one of the top 10 great public spaces for 2012.
The square is one of the most photographed places in the world.
"The rest of world knows what we already know," said Anne McDonald of the Parkways and Parks Commission. "It is a beautiful, lovely location."
There were over 60 weddings in Jackson Square in 2011, and there have been 48 so far in 2012, McDonald said. There are also many of proposals in the space, she said.
"They looked at the public use of the square, the setting of the square, the fact that it is still in a neighborhood, but it's also such an iconic place, and a beautiful, beautiful landscaped green-space," McDonald said of why Jackson Square was chosen.
The square was laid out in 1792 within the original plans for the city of New Orleans.
The Louisiana Purchase was signed on the historic site.
Other places selected by the association were located in Mobile, Denver, Chicago and Portland.
