NEW ORLEANS - One Louisiana lawmaker is ready to crack down on anyone discharging a firearm on or near a school campus.
Representative Jared Broussett of New Orleans filed a bill aimed at deterring criminal activity involving guns within 1,000 feet of a school.
Recently, Medard Nelson Elementary School in Gentilly had to be locked down after gunfire erupted nearby. Broussett said that's what prompted this action.
Anyone convicted of this proposed new crime would face a maximum fine of $5,000 and could be jailed for five to 10 years.
Guns are already outlawed on school campuses.
