NEW ORLEANS - Commuters traveling in the Central Business District Tuesday should be prepared for one intersection to be closed.

Around 7 a.m., Loyola Avenue at Howard Avenue closed for street repairs. Julia Street is also cut off in this area.

The city issued a traffic advisory in order to close the intersection to lay asphalt.

Officials said the roadway should be reopened by the afternoon.

Although the intersection cannot be crossed, two lanes of Loyola Avenue remain open in each direction.

The closure is the final major phase in the $45 million project to build the Loyola Avenue streetcar line.

Loyola Avenue has been under construction since summer 2012, and work is expected to be completed by the middle of January.

The opening of the new streetcar line is set for January 28.

Officials believe the new streetcar line will bring an economic boost to the area.

After crews finish on Loyola Avenue, they will move to work at several points on Poydras Street.
