NEW ORLEANS - Eastbound I-10 was several hours closed at Esplanade due to a major accident involving an overturned vehicle.

Around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday, a milk delivery truck and a car collided near the N. Claiborne exit, causing the truck to fall on its side, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

There was one person in the truck and two people in the car. All three were taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not expected to be serious, police said.

The truck was removed from the scene, and the highway reopened a single lane shortly before 9 a.m. The are still heavy delays in the area.

An alternate route is I-610 East. Take the Elysian Fields exit if needing to get somewhere around N. Claiborne or the Esplanade area. Otherwise, stay on 610 and merge back on to I-10 East.

There is also a heavy delay on the Westbound I-10 from Elysian Fields to Esplanade due to rubbernecking.
