NEW ORLEANS - After more than a year of construction, the Saenger Theatre is taking another big step forward Tuesday.
Local dignitaries will put their signatures on a ceremonial steel beam, which is a tradition for major construction projects and a celebration of the project's progress thus far.
The signing welcomes the next phase of construction in the theater's nearly $50 million renovation.
The theater was damaged during Hurricane Katrina, and the project to refurbish it has experienced a number of starts and stops.
The Saenger is set to open in the fall for the 2013-2014 "Broadway in New Orleans" season.
The ceremony will take place in front of the theater on Basin Street at 11:30 a.m.
