NEW ORLEANS - The Mardi Gras partying is over, and for many in the metro area and around the world, it's the beginning of the holy season of Lent.

On Ash Wednesday, thousands of people head to area churches to receive ashes, which is a symbolic gesture of repentance.

Dozens of services will take place across the metro area today, including three at St. Louis Cathedral at 7:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.
