NEW ORLEANS - Family and friends will begin saying their final goodbyes to famed musician Lionel Batiste today.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. at the Charbonnet Funeral Home, at St. Phillip and Claiborne Avenue, in Treme. It ends at 5 p.m.

The funeral will be held on Friday at the Mahalia Jackson Theater in Armstrong Park. The viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The funeral starts in the theater at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a jazz funeral procession to Mount Olivet Cemetary.

Batiste, who grew up in Treme and began playing as a child, was the legendary bass drummer of the Treme Jazz Band.

He was diagnosed with cancer in early 2012 and lost his battle to it on July 8. He was 80-years-old.

The family is taking donations to help pay for medical bills. If you would like to help, go to http://www.treme2012.com/.
