NEW ORLEANS - Investigators have confirmed that the body of a man found wrapped in carpet on the side of I-10 last week is that of a missing Mississippi man.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office said Monday that 54-year-old Philip Sherman Whitaker died from a gunshot wound. Whitaker was last seen in Harrison County, Mississippi, on Nov. 8 when he reportedly left home to go to the pharmacy.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on a maroon Toyota van with the license plate KAG 619 in connection with Whitaker’s disappearance. They didn't immediately say what state the license plate was from.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (228) 466-6900 or Central Dispatch at (228) 255-9191.
A driver called police after reporting a rolled-up piece of carpet on the Michoud Boulevard on-ramp Wednesday.
Hancock County investigators believed the decomposing body found wrapped in carpet off I-10 in New Orleans East was Whitaker based on superficial details like tattoos.
