NEW ORLEANS - Family, friends and parishioners will say goodbye on Friday to a beloved pastor.
Services for Father Michael Jacques are taking place at St. Peter Claver Church in the Sixth Ward.
According to a parishioner, "Father Mike" baptized many people at the church, married them and then baptized their children - symbolizing his close ties to community.
Jacques died on June 7 of a heart attack.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. A wake starts at 6:30 p.m. Another visitation will take place on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and the funeral mass is set for 10 a.m.
"To know Mike was to love Mike. He was passionate. He was driven, but he loved his people. You saw that in everything he did, whether it was challenging you or encouraging you to do better. He invested in the community, and that's why he'll be missed. He was more than a priest. He was family," said parishioner Ansel Augustine.
A memorial fund was set up in his honor to help send children to St. Peter Claver.
