18-wheeler slams into water off I-10; driver dead

Lauren Bale reports on an 18-wheeler accident that left the driver dead and traffic at a standstill.

NEW ORLEANS - The driver of an 18- wheeler was killed after his truck plunged into the water along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at Irish Bayou, near the Twin Spans.

The highway has one lane open eastbound and one lane westbound at noon as efforts were made to get the large truck out of the canal.

The truck veered off the highway around 8:30 a.m., police said.

According to witnesses, drivers pulled over and jumped into the water to try to free the truck driver but were unsuccessful.

Thomas Carbone, who jumped into water to try and save driver, said several people tried to break glass of the truck but couldn't get into the cab.

"We were pounding on the glass, trying to yell to the driver, but there wasn't anything we could do," he said.

Witnesses described seeing the truck swerve off the road, drive across the median and crash into the canal before a huge splash when the truck hit the water.

A woman driving a car on the other side of I-10, veered off of the roadway as she saw the truck crossing the median. Her vehicle went into the tree line and had to be towed away, though the driver of that car appeared to be okay.

Rescue crews freed the driver from cab after about an hour. First responders provided medical assistance on the scene.

A NOPD dive team got the driver from the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
