NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Mitch Landrieu celebrated the completion of the newly renovated Norwood Thompson Playground in Gert Town.

The mayor and other city officials plan to gather for a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The playground recently underwent an $848,000 project. Both the baseball field and basketball court were refurbished. A new concession building, sidewalk, fencing and playground area were also installed.

"It's critical. It 's a critical component in the crime reduction strategy we have. It's a critical part of serving the community with new quality of life initiatives and putting back the community that people knew with parks and playground and rec facilities. It really helps people understand that their home, and that these facilities are in place for them to use," said Deputy Mayor Cedric Grant.

The playground opened just in time for Landrieu's NOLA for Life event on July 20. Volunteers will fix-up areas around Gert Town.
