A woman was killed in an accident early Thursday morning.

NEW ORLEANS -- An early morning accident killed a pedestrian in the Central Business District.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Loyola Avenue and Poydras Street around 6 a.m.

A female pedestrian was hit in the 600 block of Loyola. When officers got to the scene, the woman had injuries to her body and the SUV that struck her had damage to the front driver’s side hood and grill, police said.

The pedestrian stepped into westbound Loyola traffic and was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, police said. The SUV was heading westbound on Loyola in the left lane/streetcar tracks when the pedestrian stepped out from between the greenery on the neutral ground and into the traffic lane.

The 58-year-old woman who was hit was taken to University Medical Center and taken into surgery.

The female driver of the SUV was taken to the DWI Office and tested, but she showed no signs of impairment, police said. She has been released.
