BELLE CHASE, La. – A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday after a car that hit him caused him to lose control on Belle Chase Highway, according to Troop B of the Louisiana State Police.
Around 6:30 p.m., Paige Sylve, 19, was traveling north on LA 23 when she entered the left turning lane and crossed LA 23 south near Byrd St.
As she was crossing, her Nissan Altima collided with the rear of Michael Bell’s 2006 Suzuki motorcycle, causing it to rotate and land in the right lane.
Bell, 25, was wearing a DOT approved helmet and was partially ejected from the motorcycle, police said.
Bell was transported to the hospital where he died due to injuries. Sylve and two passengers were transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.
Impairment is unknown at this time, police said.
“Always be aware of your surroundings while driving by constantly scanning the roadways for approaching vehicles from intersections and private driveways,” state police reminded drivers.
In 2010 motorcyclists were involved in over 1,800 crashes resulting in 73 fatalities in Louisiana, according to statistics from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
