Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser said regardless of the lack of change in Tropical Storm Isaac’s strength, the parish is still concerned with storm surge.
“We’re still going to be doing battle,” Nungesser said. “We just hopefully can keep it behind the levees.”
On the other hand, Nungesser believes that in the near future, those in his parish can be confident on both banks of the Mississippi River
The parish is investing $20 million on east bank levee construction and is has bonded out $50 million for ridge- and wetland-building along with dredging to lower storm surge, Nungesser said.
“One day you will be able to ride out a substantial hurricane,” Nungesser said. “That’s our economic development plan. Without the protection, we can’t encourage people to live here and open businesses here.”
