BELLE CHASSE, La. - The Plaquemines Parish Council has approved a resolution that will greenlight a $1 billion levee project that will help protect the southern part of the parish and the vital evacuation route of Highway 23.
The project had been tabled at the last council meeting when residents of the Myrtle Grove subdivision complained they were being left out of the protection afforded by the project.
That hurdle was overcome when Parish President Billy Nungesser committed to funding a flood gate that would protect Myrtle Grove.
Council member Byron Marinovich however said that it was up to the council to allocate the funds needed for that flood gate.
The $1 billion levee project is a multi-year project partnership the parish is entering into with the Army Corps.
