Search suspended for person after shrimp boat fire


BURAS – The Coast Guard has suspended a search for a person who may have been aboard a shrimp boat  in Long Bay near Buras on Saturday. 

Around 4:20 a.m., the Coast Guard received a report of a 30-foot shrimp boat on fire in the water. It was reported that the boat later sank in about four feet of water one mile from Joshua Marina. A portion of the boat was still above water. 

It is not known at this time if a person was aboard the boat when it sank. 

A Coast Guard boat crew and a Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office crew assisted in the search, which lasted for eight hours over five and half square miles. The search was suspended on Saturday around 5:45 p.m.
