Prosecutors want man accused of killing wife held without bond

MANDEVILLE, La. -- Prosecutors have asked that a man accused of brutally murdering his estranged wife before going on a crime spree be held without bond.

According to the 22nd Judicial District, a motion was filed Wednesday to hold George Dargis in jail without bond.

Dargis' bond currently stands at $2.5 million.

Police said the 39-year-old man murdered Julie Dargis, 37, in a Mandeville home Saturday morning, before using her rental car to smash into several businesses before trying to rob them.

Dargis then reportedly went to his parents home covered in blood, and saying he had ‘made a mistake,’ according to Sheriff Randy Smith.

Smith said the couple, while married, had recently separated over some of Dargis’ criminal activity, which included taking police on a chase in the Slidell area earlier in the week, on Tuesday. He was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on Nov. 28 for reckless operation of a motor vehicle, felony flight from an officer, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was released on bond on Nov. 30, two days before his alleged crime spree.

Smith said Dargis has a long criminal record that also includes charges of burglary, theft, battery, disturbing the peace, drug possession, and various traffic violations.
