NEW ORLEANS -- The Regional Transit Authority says work to extend the Canal Street streetcar across City Park Avenue, which has closed that intersection for months, is set to wrap in three weeks.
The RTA said that while the work was originally set to be done by Nov. 27, its new completion date on Dec. 4 keeps it on schedule.
“Everything has fallen into place nicely,” said RTA spokeswoman Candice Mart.
Mart said that while the intersection will reopen in 21 days, the streetcar won’t begin to cross City Park Avenue until January while crews do final tests and put finishing touches on the project.
The goal is to prevent riders from having to cross the busy intersection to change from a streetcar to bus or vice versa by creating one stop on Canal Boulevard on the lake side of City Park Avenue.
