ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. - Family and friends are celebrating the career of Sheriff Jack A. Stephens, who is hanging up his hat after serving 28 years in office.
Stephens is the longest-serving sheriff in the state, and the second longest serving in St. Bernard history.
Stephens didn't seek re-election in the fall of 2011, so his term will come to an end on June 30.
James Pohlmann was elected to replace him.
A retirement party, at which Pohlmann and Gov. Bobby Jindal will be in attendance, will be held on Thursday.
