NEW ORLEANS -- As Tropical Storm Isaac begins to move ashore, the Army Corps of Engineers has closed the Lake Borgne Surge Barrier.

The massive barrier, which sits at the confluence of the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway and the MR-GO, closed at 10 a.m.

The 1.8-mile barrier was designed to protect New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish from the flooding during storm surge, and prevent the funneling of water that occurred during Hurricane Katrina and contributed to heavy damage in the Lower Ninth Ward and St. Bernard.
