ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. - A St. Bernard Parish deputy was taken to a local hospital after being injured during the pursuit of a suspect on Thursday.
The video was captured on the dashboard cam of a commercial vehicle.
Around 9 a.m., a deputy pulled the suspect over for a traffic stop on the east side of Paris Road.
The suspect, Torraino Johnson, 28, refused to get out of his car and fled in his vehicle, according to the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office.
Other deputies began pursuing Johnson, and as he crossed Paris Road, he crashed into a sheriff's unit, injuring the deputy inside, officials said.
Johnson then got out of his car and fled on foot, deputies said. Several deputies chased Johnson and they were able to box him in. It was at this point that the suspect produced a weapon, according to the sheriff's office.
A deputy fired his gun, but he did not strike Johnson. He was apprehended and remains in custody.
"The guy has an extensive criminal history with both drugs and weapons charges, and at this point, we are still conducting the search. He had thrown some things over the fence right there. We recovered the weapon already. We are also going to look to see if he had thrown maybe some drugs or something back there," said St. Bernard Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann.
The injured deputy is expected to be OK, according to Pohlmann.
