ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. - The U.S. Department of Justice is suing St. Bernard Parish for discrimination for allegedly limiting rental housing for African-Americans after Hurricane Katrina.
The lawsuit claims that St. Bernard Parish repeatedly tried to block development of affordable apartment complexes, and that it also set up a difficult approval process for single-family rentals and eliminated multi-family housing across much of the parish.
Parish President David Peralta has not commented on the lawsuit, which involves ordinances and zoning regulations enacted under previous administrations.
