CHALMETTE, LA. - A St. Bernard Grand Jury has indicted a man for the first-degree murder of his ex-wife and attempted murder of his ex-mother-in-law earlier this year.
St. Bernard District Attorney Perry Nicosia said he is pleased with the murder indictment against 56-year-old Mark Owens. Owens is now being held without bond.
Owens was arrested in September after allegedly killing his ex-wife Kimberly Owens. Deputy Chief John Doran said then that Kimberly Owens was believed to have left her home to go to work when her ex-husband emerged, possibly from a hiding place under the home, and attacked her with an axe.
Kimberly Owens was pronounced dead at the scene.
Doran said the incident occurred at least partially in front of the victim's mother and a neighbor.
“This was a horrifying murder of an ex-wife with an axe and attempted murder of her mother,” Nicosia said.
Nicosia is encouraging all victims of domestic violence to reach out to authorities for help and protection. The Victim Assistance Center located next to the courthouse on Packenham Drive can provide services and resources to victims of domestic violence.
