ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. - The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office is urging people to be on the lookout for a new check-cashing scam.
Ppeople are getting valid-looking checks in the mail made out to them and a letter saying they won some type of contest, deputies said.
The letter also asks for a small fee in advance of a bigger payoff.
Scammers cash that check and you end up in the negative and out of the money you sent, investigators said.
