As the aftermath of Isaac continues to come into focus, state and federal governments are offering financial assistance to storm victims. Here is information on FEMA assistance, unemployment help and the expected food stamp registration process.
FEMA INDIVIDUAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE
President Obama has approved individual disaster assistance for people in south Louisiana affected by Hurricane Isaac.
The individual disaster assistance declaration now covers the following parishes: Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, St. Tammany, Ascension, Lafourche, Tangipahoa, Washington, Assumption, St. Helena, St. James, Terrebonne and Livingston parishes.
The funds cover a wide range of areas, including housing, home repairs or replacement, disaster-related personal expenses (clothing, household and other items), cleanup items and disaster-related damages to vehicles.
The process, which is familiar to thousands of Louisianians affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, begins with applications which are taken online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced that people whose jobs have been lost or interrupted because of the disaster in the parishes eligible for FEMA’s individual disaster assistance as a result of Hurricane Isaac also are eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA).
Those parishes are St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Lafourche, Livingston, Ascension, Orleans, Jefferson, St. John the Baptist and St. Tammany.
Those eligible must file DUA applications by October 2, 2012. The DUA program, federally funded but administered by the LA Workforce Commission (LWC), is now accepting claims and will continue until the end of the 30-day filing period.
The LWC is accepting all unemployment insurance claims at www.laworks.net. People without internet access or who experience trouble filing online can call 1-866-783-5567.
To receive DUA benefits, individuals must provide their Social Security number, proof of wages, and proof of employment, including the name and address of the last employer to the LWC. Proof of employment must be received within 21 days from the filing date of the claim. Self-employed individuals must provide their business and financial records, including federal income tax returns for 2011.
The Disaster Food Stamp program has been approved with Hurricane Isaac, all low- to moderate-income Louisianians should pre-apply now online or by phone. Current SNAP recipients do not need to pre-apply and would receive disaster benefits automatically if they are not already receiving the maximum allotment for their household size.
