LaPlace man arrested for shooting, killing his wife

Police say a man called police saying there was an accidental shooting in his home that left his wife dead, only he was eventually arrested and booked.

LAPLACE, La. -- St. John the Baptist Parish deputies arrested a man who fatally shot his wife early Tuesday morning. 

According to the sheriff's office, shortly after 2 a.m., 911 received a call from Richard Starks Jr., saying that he had accidentally shot his wife, Carreta Davis Starks, 47, during a "domestic issue" at a home on Oak Arbor Street in LaPlace.  

When deputies arrived at the home, Starks walked out of the home, approaching deputies with his arms up and surrendering to authorities. 

Inside the home, deputies found Carreta Davis Starks seated on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics gave her medical aid, but she victim was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner’s office.

Detectives found a semi-automatic firearm with a single magazine separated from the firearm on the floor near the body, according to the sheriff's office.

Starks Jr. was arrested for second-degree murder and booked into the Sherman Walker Corrections Center.
