St. Tammany council to vote on Causeway safety project, toll increase

Lauren Bale talks to residents about the possibility of toll increases on the Causeway.

SAINT TAMMANY PARISH, La. -- Drivers could soon see an increase in Causeway Bridge tolls.

The St. Tammany Parish Council will vote Thursday night on a Causeway safety project, which calls for increasing the tolls and debt.

It would be the first increase in toll fares since 1995.

Those in favor of the increase said the bridge is in need of repairs in order to make it safer. However, for people who commute across the causeway every day, they said a fare increase would be a burden.

"I'd go Slidell. If they bring it up to 5 dollars I'm going to start going to Slidell. You don't have to pay to cross the twin spans," said Tim Clark.
