NEW ORLEANS -- The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality says a demolition contractor who has done a lot of reconstruction work after Hurricane Katrina for the Army Corps of Engineers was ordered Tuesday to pay $40,000 in fines for illegal dumping in eastern New Orleans.
Charlie Hampton, a 55-year-old contractor who runs Hamp's Enterprises LLC. and Hamp's Construction LLC., was also ordered to clean up the illegal dump site in eastern New Orleans. Hampton pleaded guilty to dumping solid waste in a wetland.
Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality investigators said they witnessed trucks owned and operated by Hampton and Hamp's Construction dumping construction debris in a vacant lot on Almonaster Boulevard in New Orleans East.
DEQ also said Hampton was arrested in April for allegedly submitting documents with false asbestos inspection reports for demolition work in the New Orleans area.
Records show that Hampton's companies have done work for the Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Education.
Hampton did not return a call seeking comment.
