Man shot Uptown while walking dog, neighbors say

Lauren Bale talks to a man who says he was shot while trying to confront someone trying to break into cars.

New Orleans Police are investigating several shootings that happened Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. Monday, March 20 on South Liberty Street.

The victim, Tom Hayne, said he confronted the man who he said looked like he was trying to break into a car when the man pulled a gun on him and fired shots. Hayne said he was hit in the leg and the man ran off. Hayne was taken to the hospital and was released later that morning.

"What I should have done is call 911," Hayne said. "It's a little against my nature not to confront something that's wrong, but I think it's best left up to the police force."

Hayne said the worst part was his wife worrying about him and said he is thankful he is okay.

Four other bullets went into a neighbor's house.

"There wasn't any denying the sound. It was startling, loud, frightening,” resident Michelle Walpoll said

The shooting on an otherwise quiet street has left residents shaken.

"It's frustrating when you have a shooting in your neighborhood,” Walpoll said. “It's been 6 years since we've had one and I'd like it to never happen again."

Police say to never confront someone committing a crime and after surviving his ordeal, Hayne says he now agrees with that advice.

"Sometimes we don't think, we just react and if I have it happen again I'll probably handle it a little differently. I think it is best left up to the police force,” Hayne said.
