Motorcyclist killed in five-vehicle pile-up on 610E near I-10 merge

One person is dead following a five-vehicle crash just before midnight on I-610 eastbound near I-10.

NEW ORLEANS -- Police are investigating a deadly pile-up involving four cars and a motorcycle shortly before midnight Sunday, April 9.

According to New Orleans Police, the driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene after running into a multi-car pile-up on I-610 East just before the I-10 merge.

Police said a Nissan sedan was stalled in the right-hand lane after hitting the right side railing of the flyover bridge. 

An oncoming Infiniti sedan slowed to avoid the Nissan, followed by a Mercedes-Benz sedan. A Hummer SUV then hit the Mercedes causing a chain reaction crash with the Infiniti, police said. 

NOPD said that's when the Harley Davidson motorcycle hit the crashed Infiniti sedan.

The passenger riding on the motorcycle was transported to the hospital for treatment. No other reports of injuries were immediately available. 

Toxicology results are pending for the remaining drivers in the incident.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine an official cause of death and release the deceased victim's name upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
