LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana police chief says a burned truck found recently in Texas was registered to the man now facing a murder charge in the disappearance of college student Michaela "Mickey" Shunick.
Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft on Friday would not detail the evidence that led police to believe that Shunick is dead.
Thirty-three-year-old Brandon Scott Lavergne was booked Thursday with first-degree murder and with aggravated kidnapping in connection with Shunick's disappearance May 19, days before her 22nd birthday.
Craft said that much work remains in the investigation.
He said the truck that was found in Texas was registered to Lavergne and is believed to be the white truck that is seen on a video taken early on the morning of May 19. That video shows Shunick, on her bicycle, in the same area.
