NEW YORK (AP) — A man has been arrested after authorities say he hacked at his wife with a meat cleaver on a New York City street before firefighters rescued her.

Police say Ming Guang Huang was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation Monday. He was arrested on charges including attempted murder. It's not immediately clear whether the 28-year-old has a lawyer.

Authorities say the attack unfolded Sunday on the main thoroughfare in New York City's Chinatown.

Firefighters say they saw Huang dragging a screaming woman along Canal Street. Authorities say he pulled out the knife and slashed her as firefighters rushed over and subdued him.

Police haven't released the wife's name. She is hospitalized. An update on her condition isn't immediately available.
