NEW ORLEANS -- People who live near the apartment complex where the body of 6-year-old Ahlittia North was found have been putting together a memorial of stuffed animals and candles since early Tuesday morning.

It has been an emotional time for North’s family. But the 6-year-old's death is stirring up a lot of emotions among people who aren’t her relatives.

One neighbor says Ahlittia would wave to her every morning through her window. She told us she became physically sick when she learned the child was missing.

Others have passed by the crime scene with tears in their eyes. The people of this community are coping with a combination of sadness, disbelief, outrage and fear.

Many can’t believe this happened, and they say it makes them want to be more protective of their own children.

“It is so sad because I have a 6-year-old and I am a mother myself. I keep a close eye on my kids anywhere I go, and for a child to leave for that long and not know where your child at come on -- I have lived in Woodmere for 19 years, and I have never even dreamed something like this would hit so close to home. It’s very scary,” said one neighbor.

“I am hurt about it because we have never had this kind of tragedy in our neighborhood,” added another woman who lives in the area.

North’s life was taken away, but it’s clear she won’t be forgotten by the people of this community.
