COVINGTON, La. - An attic fire at an apartment complex displaced 12 families after their rooms suffered water damage when the sprinkler system was activated, a spokesman for the St. Tammany Parish Fire Protection Dist. 12 said.
The incident occurred around 10:55 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the spokesman, fire units responded to an alarm at a complex on Park Place and were alerted by a resident that there was a fire with heavy smoke on the third floor in one of the buildings.
The sprinkler system activated and prevented the fire from spreading but did not extinguish it. Firefighters put out the rest of the blaze, but the 12 apartments were damaged by the sprinkler and the Red Cross was on hand to help out the residents.
The situation was under control by 12:20 a.m. Wednesday. There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the spokesman said lightning was suspected.
