ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. -- Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a vacant home in Slidell, according to Larry Hess, chief of St. Tammany Parish Fire Protection District #1.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 61000 block of Slidell Avenue around 2:30 a.m., according to Hess.
"Firefighters arrived on the scene in a little over 9 minutes to find heavy flames showing from a 1500 square-foot, single-story residence. The original structure was a mobile home that had a few rooms added on," said Hess. "It took firefighters almost an hour to extinguish the fire and bring the scene under control.
The home had been vacant for sometime, and the owner lived nearby at a relative's home. She called 911 after dogs barking woke her and she spotted the blaze, said Hess.
Overgrown vegetation and limited access hampered fire fighting efforts. The home was completely destroyed in the blaze, according to Hess. No injuries were reported.
