SLIDELL, La. -- A new project called Habitat for Heroes kicked off Monday with a groundbreaking for a new home for a local veteran.

The project is being organized by the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity, and a gift basket raffle is underway for the community to help cover the cost. The basket is full of gift certificates donated in the name of local military members.

The build is expected to begin in January on a donated lot along West Hall Avenue.

Many veterans are excited to see a program like this created.

"It's a chance that veterans don't receive every day,” said Seattle Amar, who served in the Navy during Vietnam, “Most veterans did their service and that's all, but for them to get any kind of reward on top of that is gratifying."

If you'd like to buy a raffle ticket, you've got until next Friday. If you'd like to register, as a veteran, for the home, you have just the rest of this week to do so. Visit the habitat office on Old Spanish Trail in Slidell or click here.
