HAMMOND, La. – Tangipahoa Parish deputies arrested a 21-year-old woman after they say she was speeding while having a child unrestrained in her back seat.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards said that around 4 pm Tuesday, a deputy tried to stop a Ford Mustang driven by Keori Jones of Hammond while she was traveling on Happywoods Road.

Edwards said that the car driven by Jones was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center lane of traffic and skidded about 44 feet before leaving the roadway, sideswiping a telephone pole and coming to rest in a large set of bushes.

A spokesperson said Jones smelled of alcohol and that neither she nor a young child in the back seat was restrained.

Jones was taken into custody and charged with DWI, improper lane usage and a child restraint violation.

Neither Jones nor the child suffered any injuries. The child was given to a family member.
