Eyewitness News has learned the Independence Town Council has called for a special meeting on Monday morning to ask Mayor Michael Ragusa to resign.  Alderman Calvin Batiste confirmed the plan late this afternoon.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office says the Independence mayor was released on his own recognizance after his arrest Thursday.

Michael Ragusa was booked for battery on an officer, resisting arrest and public intimidation, which is a felony.

The arrest stems from an incident in August, that Eyewitness News reported first, in which the mayor intervened in a traffic stop involving his son.  The warrant affidavit says the mayor cursed at a female police officer, forcefully slammed the police unit door on that officer then threatened her job.

His first court appearance on the charges is set for the end of November.
