KENTWOOD, La. - Administrators were on alert at Kentwood High Magnet School Monday, on the first school day without one of its band instructors.
That’s because 64-year-old Kenneth Dillon was arrested for possessing pornography involving juveniles. Many people in the community, both who know Dillon and don’t, were stunned by the news.
Kendrick Winters, who was a band student last year, said, "It's shocking. I didn't expect that from him. He was like a cool person.”
"I wouldn't want that kind of person around my kids at all," said parent Dwayne Ennis.
Dillon’s biography on the school’s website says he’s been involved with Kentwood High since 2004 where he’s served as a volunteer, a teacher, band director and most recently leader of the Jazz Ensemble. District leaders say Dillon was fired from his part-time position following the arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office says it’s been investigating Dillon for eight months and found evidence in his Kentwood home that he’d been using “peer to peer” networks to download child porn, including one video that showed what appears to be a child around 8-years-old having sex with an adult. And the Sheriff's Office says their investigation is far from over. Detectives are now looking for evidence of any active molestation that Dillon could have been involved in, especially with his close proximity to kids at his job.
The situation has parents on edge about how safe their community really is these days.
Ennis said, "He probably done messed up a lot of kids’ life that want to learn band or anything. Now they probably won't trust the male adults because they think something like this might happen again."
Dillon bonded out of the Tangipahoa Parish Jail Monday afternoon.
