KENTWOOD, La. - The chief of the Kentwood Police Department has been indicted in connection with a missing evidence case, the Louisiana Attorney General's Office announced Friday.

Gregory Newton, 59, was indicted by a grand jury on one felony count of malfeasance in office and one felony count of unauthorized use of a movable. Each count carries a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to $5,000.

According to the Attorney General's Office, State Police began an investigation after receiving a complaint alleging that about $2,000 recovered in a burglary was misused by the Kentwood Police Department.

Newton, who was in the position of guarding the evidence, is accused of tampering with the money.
