ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. -- A suspect who was shot in a Christmas night gun battle with deputies has died, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
Antoine Tobias, who was in the St. Tammany Parish Jail, "was in the Jail Medical Clinic when he informed the medical staff that he was having breathing issues. Tobias fell on the floor and was put back on his bunk to be assessed by the on-duty nurse. While the nurse was on the phone with the on-call physician, other nurses were monitoring him," said a statement from the sheriff's office.
Around 12 a.m. before an ambulance arrived at the jail, Tobias stopped breathing. Nurses began giving Tobias CPR. He appeared to be revived and was taken by ambulance to St. Tammany Parish Hospital about 12:20 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
At 1:20 a.m., the sheriff's office was informed that Tobias had died. The St. Tammany Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy on Tobias to determine the cause of death.
Tobias was being held in the jail on a $200,000 bond for aggravated burglary and two counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer. Tobias had been in jail since Jan. 3 after being released from the hospital.
