SLIDELL, La. – A 55-year-old pedestrian walking on I-10 died after being struck by a pickup truck Thursday night, according to the Louisiana State Police.

Around 9 p.m., Henry Simmons Jr. was walking east along the white dashed line of the I-10 acceleration lane leading from the eastbound onramp connected to LA 433/Old Spanish Trail.

Simmons was wearing dark clothing and the road is poorly lit in that area, police said.

Walter Eason III, 19, was traveling east from the onramp and struck Simmons with his Chevrolet pickup truck.

The truck and Simmons came to rest partially across the center and right eastbound lands, police said.

Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene and alcohol use is unknown. Eason, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and showed no detectable signs of alcohol in his system, police said.

Nearly 70 percent of all pedestrian fatalities occur at night, according to police

Louisiana law prohibits pedestrians from walking upon any interstate highway.
