COVINGTON, La. - Police said a group of grownups used metal poles to beat a pit bull into letting go of an 8-year-old girl who was bitten several times by the dog.

Covington Police Spokesman Jack West said the incident occurred on April 17 around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of West 29th and North Van Buren St.

According to West, Covington Police were informed about the 8-year-old girl who was in the emergency room with several bites on both arms.

When officers went to the scene of the attack, they said they found a tan pit bull dead. They said that witnesses had told them that adults in the area used metal poles to hit the dog and get it to let go of the girl. Animal control was called to take the dog's body to check for rabies.

Police are looking for the owner of the dog and are asking anyone with information to call Covington Police (892-8500) or Crimestoppers at 1-877-903-STOP.
