INDEPENDENCE, La. - Independence High School was put on lockdown for a while Tuesday after police found an unloaded handgun among a student's possessions.
According to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards, a 16-year-old male student was suspected of smoking marijuana in a bathroom on campus. A search of his property turned up the .38 caliber gun wrapped in a t-shirt in the student's backpack.
The school went on lockdown during a complete search of the campus.
The juvenile was charged with possession of CDS, possession of a firearm while in possession of CDS, possession of stolen property and possession of a firearm in a Drug Free Zone.
As a result, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office additionally charged 3 other minors with narcotics related charges.
The 4 minors were then transported to the Tangipahoa Parish Juvenile Detention Center.
