BAY ST. LOUIS, Ms. - A 41-year-old man accused of kidnapping two young children, sexually molesting them and then slashing the throat of one was arrested Wednesday evening, according to Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam.
James Harold Smith was booked with attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual battery on a child and resisting arrest. His bond is set at $3.5 million.
Adam said that officers received a call from a person living in the 20000 block of Mitchell Road, who said that an 8-year-old boy had shown up at the caller's house covered in blood and saying that someone had tried to kill him.
Officers on the scene located Smith with another young child in a nearby camper.
Police said as more sheriff's office personnel arrived on the scene, Smith tried to elude officers in a vehicle with the 5-year-old victim inside.
Officers chased the suspect to the end of a road and Smith then tried to escape on foot.
While the search for Smith was on, the 8-year-old whose throat had been slashed was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Hospital in critical condition. Police said he had been upgraded to stable.
Smith meanwhile, was apprehended on Highway 23 in Hancock County.
The sheriff's office said Smith had kidnapped the two young victims from a home on Highway 11 in Poplarville and brought the kids to his camper where he sexually molested them. The brothers were said to have been in the care of a female distant cousin of Smith in Poplarville at the time of the abduction.
