SLIDELL, La. - There was good news Thursday for the city of Slidell.

The U.S. Department of the Interior awarded grants "support recreational boating," and Slidell will be getting $1.5 million to use in Heritage Park.

Slidell's grant is the largest one in America. The city requested the maximum amount, and that amount was granted.

The money will be spent at the Municipal Marina at Heritage Park.

They'll renovate bulkheads, rebuild docking spaces and install walkways, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior, which handed out 11 grants all together in 10 states.

This is the only project awarded money in the state of Louisiana.

The improvements will be a joint effort between the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the city of Slidell.

WWL-TV reporter Doug Mouton will talk to Slidell Mayor Freddy Drennan Thursday afternoon, and have a lot more on this story in our evening newscasts.
