SLIDELL, La. -- Six hours after a search by air, land and sea began at the foot Wednesday of the Twin Spans, Slidell shoplifting suspect Devin Williams, from New Orleans, was pulled out of the marsh and booked into Orleans Parish Prison.
Bernell Morgan had been captured by Slidell police earlier, when detectives say the pair crashed a stolen Mustang after fleeing officers. They were being chased for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in iPhones, but authorities found much more than that, including weapons, in the vehicle.
Eyewitness News found similar trouble in one of the suspects' criminal history. Devin Williams has arrests for possession of marijuana and convictions for looting, attempted theft over $500 and simple criminal damage to property. Bernell Morgan has two possession of marijuana arrests on his record.
Slidell police say the two are also suspects in several violent crimes in New Orleans, but NOPD says that investigation is on-going.
However, this is yet another crime in Slidell involving suspects from New Orleans, with criminal history in New Orleans. It's something Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith says his department will not back down from.
"I think they underestimate us here on the Northshore," he said. "What we've seen is an increase in the criminal element from across the lake, coming over here as if we're easy prey. So we made a stance again yesterday."
He said team work between agencies, like what happened Wednesday, helps keep that stance strong.
Williams is facing charges in New Orleans of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
When returned to Slidell, he faces charges of aggravated flight and theft over $500. Bernell Morgan is booked in Slidell for theft over $500, injuring public record and resisting an officer.
