PONCHATOULA, La. – Humphreys County police have arrested two suspects in the murder of a well known broadcaster who was stabbed to death Friday evening, according to officials.
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said detectives arrested Eric Lane Maurer, 31, on charges of robbing and killing 65-year-old Rube Rogers, Maurer's stepfather. Ricky Maurer, Eric's father, was also arrested and booked with accessory after the fact.
Around 11 p.m. Friday police were called to the Paradise Road residence of Rube Rogers, of Ponchatoula, finding him unresponsive and with multiple stab wounds. First responders pronounced Rogers dead on the scene.
Eric Maurer reportedly fled the scene with his father and drove to Waverly, Tennessee, where they both tried to get a job at singer Loretta Lynn's ranch, Panepinto said. Lynn’s son, Ernest Ray Lynn, oversees the ranch, and he was close a friend of Rube Rogers. Eric had become acquainted with Ernest Ray and thought he could get a job.
The Maurers were arrested after detectives tracked them to a hotel Nashville.
Friends of Rogers remember his generosity.
"When you say that someone would give the shirt off his back, that's a cliche," said long-time friend Ken Benitez. "But Rube, he did that."
Maurer, according to deputies, say Maurer also has a twin brother, and Rogers took in both of them.
"Having been killed perhaps by someone that he did everything for. Maybe it's appropriate in the sense that he died in his last breath helping people," said Benitez.
The two suspects will be extradited back to Tangipahoa. Eric Maurer will face charges of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. Ricky Maurer will be charged with accessory after the fast for first-degree murder, and detectives are gathering evidence and trying to determine whether Ricky will face more charges.
